Why Hex Size Matters More Than It Seems

A hexagon grid looks like a single design choice, but the side length changes what the paper is actually useful for almost completely. Go too small and you can’t fit meaningful detail inside a single cell. Go too large and you waste page space or your battle map doesn’t match your miniatures. There’s no universal “right” hex size – there’s a right size for what you’re drawing.

The Three Sizes, By the Numbers

“Width across flats” is the hexagon’s flat-side-to-flat-side measurement – side length times the square root of 3 – and it’s usually the number that actually matters when you’re deciding whether something fits inside a cell.

Organic Chemistry: Why So Small?

At 1/4 inch, a single benzene ring occupies about six adjacent cells. That’s deliberately tight. Organic chemistry notation involves drawing fused-ring structures – naphthalene, anthracene, steroid backbones – where multiple hexagons share edges. A larger hex size would push a moderately complex molecule off the edge of the page. Tabletop Gaming: Why 1 Inch Became Standard

The 1-inch hex isn’t arbitrary – it’s sized around miniature bases. Most commercial tabletop miniatures use 25-32mm circular or hex bases, and a 1-inch (25.4mm) hex cell is the smallest size that comfortably holds a standard miniature without the base overlapping into neighboring cells. That’s also why it’s the size assumed by hex-based rules variants for D&D, Pathfinder, and most other tabletop RPGs that support hex movement. 1cm: The General-Purpose Option

If your use case doesn’t fit neatly into “chemistry notation” or “miniature scale,” 1cm hex paper is the reasonable default. It’s large enough to letter a short label by hand inside each cell – useful for city/region-scale hex maps, puzzle design, or any hex-based diagram where the cell needs to hold a word or short code rather than a miniature or a molecule.

Choosing Between Them

Ask what has to physically fit inside one hexagon. A single ring atom needs the small 1/4-inch grid. A 28-32mm miniature needs the 1-inch grid. A short text label or a rough sketch element usually fits comfortably in 1cm.
